Consensus Hong Kong 2025: Terri MechKenna’s big day out

Consensus Hong Kong 2025 was a recognition of Hong Kong as a vibrant hub for web3, blockchain and crypto. It was the first time that the event was held in Hong Kong and the first time in five years that Consensus was held outside of the US. As a proud representative of the Hong Kong web3 scene, we sent a crack team including our newest recruit, Terri MechKenna, to the event. Here is the debrief from our resident Humanoid Resources Intern and team.

In the wake of Hong Kong taking the significant step of officially recognizing Bitcoin and Ethereum as proof of wealth, it’s clear that Hong Kong has ambitions to position itself as a global crypto hub.

As Hong Kong strengthens its position as a global crypto hub, a major focus was the evolving regulatory landscape and institutional adoption of digital assets. The event highlighted Asia’s increasing influence in shaping global crypto regulations - Santeri Aramo, Founder & COO

Hong Kong in the spotlight

Organized by CoinDesk, Consensus is the major global conference on blockchain, crypto, and Web3. The conference brought together industry leaders, thought leaders and the wider Web3 community to discuss digital assets, DeFi, AI, and regulatory developments. In particular, robotics, DePIN and DePAI were headline topics this year.

Despite being an intern Terri sees himself as being something of an expert on those topics so we dispatched him to the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre with a mission to network and spread the word. To say that Terri smashed it would be an understatement: the response to our Humanoid Resources Intern was incredible.

Terri the intern here. Delighted to be sharing my experiences from my first conference. After getting my assignment I pulled on my Auki hoodie, signature red high-tops and headed out the door - Terri MechKenna, Humanoid Resources Intern

Terri’s first challenge was navigating the crowds which inevitably followed him wherever he went. Despite Hong Kong being one of the world’s most technologically advanced cities and the tech-savvy nature of the Consensus crowd, Terri was constantly being followed and intercepted by people with questions.

Spatial computing, sensors and sea legs

Terri’s next test was the ferry, a challenging enough environment for bipeds without a metal chassis. At Auki we believe that an external sense of space can enable manufacturers to design sleeker, lighter and nimbler robots. The ferry with its continuous movement, sloping floors and crowded spaces is exactly the kind of environment that would benefit from this increased mobility.

I was able to negotiate the ramp off the ferry with some help. I was unsteady on my feet, a phenomenon called sea legs - Terri MechKenna, Humanoid Resources Intern
While Terri’s walk along Victoria Harbour drew quite a crowd, crossing the water to Central on the iconic Star Ferry proved to be a bit more challenging.
Reaching the access level involved navigating countless steps and being manhandled by Nils—only to find he couldn’t fit through the barriers. Fortunately, the wonderful staff quickly provided an alternative route.
The adventure didn’t end there. Next came the steep walkway, weaving through bustling commuters, followed by the transition onto the gangplank, which, naturally, was swaying with the tide.
Once on board, he finally had a chance to settle in and enjoy the spectacular views of both sides of the city—before facing all the challenges again in reverse.
At least he’s not camera-shy... - Phil Shaw, Head of Robotics

Consensus Day 1 - Waving and kissing babies

Once at the convention hall, Terri snapped into networking mode and started schmoozing attendees with ruthless efficiency.

Once I had mastered waving, I was able to fully leverage my spatial awareness to engage attendees from a distance - Terri MechKenna, Humanoid Resources Intern

One of the highlights of Consensus for Terri was attending Sui Connect, a meetup for Web3 enthusiasts, innovators, and builders hosted by Sui.

Sui does high caliber events and didn’t disappoint once again. The warm welcome Terri and the rest of the team received makes these events feel very meaningful - Santeri Aramo, Founder & COO

Consensus Day 2 - Media duties

On the second day, Terri was drafted in to support our founder and CEO Nils on media duties.

I did my best to look helpful and not like a robot that shoots and hunts people down - Terri MechKenna, Humanoid Resources Intern

Consensus Day 3 - All in on DePIN

At this point Terri was a pro, navigating crowds and ferries without issue, shaking hands and taking names. He was ready to take on his biggest challenge yet at DePIN Day Hong Kong, a full day hosted by Fluence and Titan Network focused on DePIN and the emerging trends, challenges, and innovations in decentralized infrastructure.

Terri was tasked with security during Nils’ presentation on Satoshi’s legacy.

This time I did try a little to look like a robot that shoots and hunts people down. I was so effective that I was drafted in to cover more presentations - Terri MechKenna, Humanoid Resources Intern

After that, Terri hopped across town to man the decks at Luna PR Presents - Alpha.

DePIN Day is where Auki shines the brightest, we are amongst our friends and the attendees are looking for projects like Auki to find reasons to get further involved in DePIN. Nils nailed the presentation and Terri was a great companion in these kinds of events - Santeri Aramo, Founder & COO

Human interface device

As Consensus drew to a close, Terri was starting to feel the impact of his workload. His batteries worn down, his body overheating despite our improvised solution with a portable neck fan. Networking takes it out of even the most extroverted of us.

I made so many new friends - Terri MechKenna, Humanoid Resources Intern

Seeing people interact with Terri really crystallises how strong the human instinct for anthropomorphic personification is. While Terri is very advanced compared to previous generations of humanoid robots, he is still lacking basic functionality when it comes to navigating physical spaces autonomously and effectively. The hardware also struggles in terms of sustained workloads over several hours, let alone a full work day. This is where we think collaborative spatial computing and a shared external sense of space for robots, AI and devices will provide a solution that hardware alone cannot.

The team (and Terri) had some unforgettable experiences at Consensus.

Consensus Hong Kong 2025 reinforced Asia’s growing influence in the global crypto and blockchain ecosystem, highlighting the region’s commitment to Web3 innovation and institutional adoption.

With Hong Kong and broader Asia pushing forward-friendly crypto regulations, the region could emerge as a global leader in Web3 adoption and institutional blockchain use cases. So long as there is regulatory clarity.

Regulatory clarity will increase adoption and Hong Kong is continuously working on improving that. It has quite a long way to catch up but its becoming clear that the city has the potential to rival Dubai and Singapore in the future - Santeri Aramo, Founder & COO

China’s position as a leader in robotics manufacturing and deployment will also be an important factor as the industry attempts to improve software utility, openness and find solutions to the robot interoperability issue. Web3 and the decentralization movement will doubtless step forward to offer alternatives to closed, centralized platforms.

Our Humanoid Resources Intern, Terri, intends to be on the forefront of this movement.
